THE DISTILLING PROCESS

An Australian owned and operated nano-distillery, the concept 'hand crafted' is a lot more than just a tagline to us; this is because we grow and/or locally source our own potatoes, rutabaga, sugar beets and botanical/infusions (incl. Hops) which are then distilled throughout our uniquely twisted spirit range.

STEP 1

MASHING

Our potatoes, rutabaga and sugar beets; are first washed, peeled and then smashed into a blended pulp. After being transferred to our mash vessel, the pulp is then boiled; and mixed with malted barley to help break down the pulp's starch into fermentable sugars. After the pulp has cooled, we add dextrose with our own special distillers’ yeast and then transfer the mash into our fermentation tanks.

STEP 2

FERMENTATION

Our mash is left to ferment at a constant temperature, leaving us with around a 12% ABV fermented mash. The spent mash is then used as either compost or as feed for the farms flock of pedigree Southdown ‘Baby Doll’ Sheep.

STEP 3

DISTILLATION

The fermented mash is then run through "Serpentine", our double bubble column still which houses 16 copper plates.  After distillation, we guarantee only the hearts of the run are bottled and diluted to a drinkable 38% ABV. Because we are a farmhouse nano-distillery we do not fixate upon mass production, instead our mission is to focus on supporting Australian agriculture by offering quality twisted infused spirits, distilled and infused primarily from agricultural produce at an affordable price point.

STEP 4

TO GLASS

Unlike most distilleries, we grow and create our spirits from scratch rather than buying in a pre-made/mass produced neutral grain spirit. Admittedly our Farm to Glass® concept can become a time intensive process, but similar to the importance of wine terrior, barrel ageing of whiskies, beer IBUs, the traceability and seasonal variance of our spirits is what makes Twisted Snake so uniquely twisted.

Infusing our spirits primarily with agricultural produce further complements and elevates the unique seasonality that can be tasted across our full range.
